Preparing for Tests

There are two lists on this page... scroll down for the second list...

How do I Prepare for a Math Test?

1. Do Problems!! Math is NOT a spectator sport! Just like any sport, you must spend time practicing to improve. You MUST work problems to ensure understanding.

a. Rework problems from quizzes, especially problems you got wrong.

b. Rework homework problems. Focus on problems you did not understand.

c. Complete problems from your text book. Choose those that have answers are in the back of the book so you can check your understanding.

2. Review your notes from class. Take time to make sure you understand all vocabulary.

3. Create flash cards to test yourself. Self-created study guides are helpful, too.

4. Begin studying several days before a test. By reviewing a little each day, you can complete a review of all the material prior to the test. Also, it will allow you time to seek extra help if needed.

5. If you are having difficulty with a concept, look it up in the text book or Google it. There are many examples in the text that will help you recall the steps for solution of a problem and there are countless online resources that can also help!

6. If your textbook has online resources like "self-check quizzes" or "personal tutor", practice for tests and quizzes by using these resources. It is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT that you practice with problems that give you "instant feedback"... that is, you must be able to check whether your solutions are correct or incorrect and you MUST rework your solutions for the problems you get wrong.

Second List:

Test Checklist

This checklist can help you determine whether your preparation for test taking is on target. This checklist was developed by educator Dr. Richard Felder and presented by Dr. Barbara Oakley in the University of California, San Diego MOOC "Learning How to Learn"

To answer the question, “How should I prepare for a test?” you should try to be able to answer “yes” to most of the questions on this list.

  • Did you make a serious effort to understand the material?

  • Did you work with classmates on homework problems?

  • Did you attempt to outline each homework question before discussing it with classmates?

  • Did you participate actively in homework group discussions?

  • Did you consult with the teacher when you were having trouble?

  • Did you understand all of your homework problem solutions?

  • Did you ask in class for explanations of homework problems that were unclear to you?

  • If you had a study guide, did you carefully go through it before the test and make sure you understood all of the material?

  • Did you go over the study guide and problems with classmates and quiz one another?

  • If there was a review session, did you pay attention and ask questions about any concepts or ideas that you were unsure of?

  • Did you get a reasonable night’s sleep before the test?

This last one is SUPER important!!
